JACLYN SMOKER - PSYCHOLOGIST
Jaclyn has been a registered psychologist since 2004 and has extensive experience as a psychologist working with children, adolescents and adults across a broad range of issues including mental health issues, complex behavioural issues, attachment/relationship issues, phobias, traumatic stress and grief, sleep issues, health issues, chronic pain, life transition and adjustment issues. Jaclyn has extensive experience working with veterans, emergency services/front line workers, victims of crime, children in out of home care, disability and NDIS clients (plan and self-managed) and those on workcover.
Jaclyn commenced her early career working in child protection and out of home care working as the sole psychologist for Albury and Deniliquin CSC. She successfully obtained the position of a Senior Psychologist, continuing in the role for approximately 13 years. The role provided her with extensive experience in a variety of complex issues facing children, their families, carers and care team. She provided expert consultation to staff, professionals, agencies and the courts to assist with their decision making in complex matters. This role provided Jaclyn with extensive experience in a variety of complex issues for children, their families, carers and care team. Whilst the role was challenging at times the client and family work was often very rewarding. A number of the children she worked with are now adults in independent living and over recent years they, their families and carers have continued to reach out to her for support when needed.
Jaclyn later went on to establish JLS Psychology Services eight years and since this time the main focus of her work is to provide psychological intervention and therapy. Jaclyn has a particular interest in working with people who have been impacted by exposure to past traumatic and stressful events. Whilst these experiences can result in the development of traumatic stress disorders, people can also develop other issues such as social anxiety, phobia's health anxiety, sleep issues, difficulties with emotional regulation and relationship difficulties. These experiences also cause people to often develop negative and unhelpful thoughts and belief systems about themselves, others and the world around them. When clients are ready, Jaclyn works with them to reprocess these traumatic and stressful events, with the goal of assistng them to them become stronger and more confident beings in the world.
Jaclyn is able to relate to and develop rapport with the vast majority of clients who present for psychological services. She is skilled at being able to build rapport with people of all ages and from various backgrounds, even the most highly anxious of clients attending their inital sessions. Jaclyn then works collaboratively with clients to develop therapeutic goals. A treatment plan is developed implementing core therapeutic evidence based practices with the aim of achieving more long term results. Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Psychology (GDipAppPsyc) - The University of Wollongong (2000).
