FAQs

Fee information - Medicare
Medicare rebates are available for psychological treatment by registered psychologists under the Australian Government's Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative. This scheme provides considerable assistance to people living with mental heath problems, allowing them greater access to psychologists and providing more affordable mental healthcare nationally.

What will it cost me?
The cost to you will vary depending on the length of the session and the fee being charged for the service. A 50 minute session at JLS Psychology Services is currently $210 per session. Additonal report writing is typically charged at the same rate according to the length of time taken by the psychologist to prepare for and write the report outside of direct client hours. However there may be times where the fee is greater than this to cover costs such as administration and scoring of psychological testing or if the report is required for legal purposes due to its complexity.

Bulk billing is when you will not have to pay anything. The cost for a psychological therapy session through psychologists in private practice is usually greater than the Medicare rebate. JLS Psychology Services is not a bulk billing practice so clients referred by their GP under a MHCP will incur out of pocket expenses each session. Clients are required to pay the full cost of the session on the day and in most cases our staff will be able to process your Medicare refund into your nominated cheque or savings account card you present on the day.

Can I directly make an appointment and still claim through Medicare?
No. You must be referred by your GP or paediatrician and your referral must be current as they are only valid for up to 12 months. Your GP will need to complete a detailed mental health assessment and prepare a Mental Health Care Plan before you can make an appoinment, and claim through Medicare.

How, and who can make a referal to see Jaclyn?
Jaclyn is a registered psychologist with a Medicare Provider Number, therefore Jaclyn can accept any client that has been referred under a MHCP by a GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist. Clients can attend appointments without a MHCP referral but they will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate.
